INTERESTING ADVERTISING – 1938
The SUMMER RESORT GUIDE in the June 14th 1938 edition of THE GLOBE and MAIL listed “Ontario’s Leading Summer Resorts, Hotels and Cottages”.
The section on Haliburton included twelve local resorts, as well as a hotel in Lindsay. The second advertisement in that part of the listing was one that caught the readers’ eye:
A NEW MAN Has bought and is managing the Bayview Hotel at that unsurpassed beauty spot on Gull Lake. COTTAGES, boating, bathing, fishing. Write for folder. W.H.Wunker, Miner’s Bay, Ontario.
Wm. Wunker was known for his way with words, as evidenced by this advertisement, and the verbiage of early MBL folders. A couple years later, he crafted the first motto for the Haliburton Chamber of Commerce: “Nature at it’s rugged best!”
The ad helped to bring in customers. At the end of the 1938 season, “The Governor”, who had decided to retain all grocery boxes from the store, in case the business was not a success, and they were needed for packing, decided that they could be discarded.
