THE ORIGINAL, AND A COPY CAT
One of the first of these vignettes, produced in 2018, and released soon after, showed this view on an early black and white post card produced by THE BAY VIEW HOTEL.
The view from the top of Deer’s Leap on Long Island looks west across Gull Lake. Reference was made in the earlier story that MBL later issued the same view, with a new caption, after the Wunker family took over the resort.
These images show both the original sepia print from which those previously shown post cards were produced, and a later generic “copy cat” image.
The original sepia card has a “Kinmount” cancellation on the front, and “Kirkfield” on the back. It was mailed in August of 1929. The unknown correspondent may have been staying at the Hotel at Miners’ Bay, and pronounced it “a very nice place”.
The second card is a lesser-quality re-production of the scene titled “HUCKLEBERRY ISLAND, GULL LAKE, MINDEN, ONT., CANADA”. Sold throughout the region, it was produced by J. K. Evans of Walsingham, Ontario, who issued a number of cards of the Haliburton area.
